The island of Catanduanes in the Philippines, with a population of 270,000 people, is preparing for the tropical storm Fengshen, which is approaching with wind gusts of up to 80 km/h. Over 9,000 residents have been evacuated to safer areas, following weather warnings about the risks of coastal flooding caused by waves of 1.2 meters.
Local authorities have activated evacuation plans for high-risk areas, including coastal communities and those prone to landslides. The Philippines is affected annually by about 20 storms and typhoons, and experts warn that the intensity of storms is increasing due to climate change. Recently, the country was hit by devastating earthquakes, including one of magnitude 6.9 in Cebu province, which resulted in loss of life.
