Japan has evacuated over two million people and issued flood and landslide warnings as Typhoon Mekkhala approaches, which has already affected Taiwan.

The storm has left approximately six million people in Taiwan unable to go to work or classes, causing torrential rains in the southern regions. Mekkhala, now classified as a tropical storm, is heading towards the Ryukyu Islands in southern Japan, where authorities have warned of the risks of landslides and flooding. Over 200 flights have been canceled, and railway and highway routes have been suspended. The car manufacturer Toyota has halted operations at a factory in Kyushu.

In Taiwan, authorities have closed offices and schools in the affected regions, and evacuations have been ordered in Hualien due to the risks of a natural dam lake forming. Although the rains can cause damage, they are essential for replenishing the island's water reservoirs.
