Emergency teams in Taiwan worked Saturday to restore electricity to approximately 56,000 households affected by Typhoon Champi, which struck the island and is heading toward China and Japan. The storm has caused one death and more than 500 injuries since Thursday.
More than 5,000 people were evacuated before the typhoon arrived, uprooting trees, downing power lines and causing temporary flooding. In the Miaoli region of western Taiwan, nearly 24 centimeters of rainfall were recorded on Saturday.
Champi was briefly a super typhoon, with winds of nearly 300 kilometers per hour. Its intensity later decreased, but gusts were still reaching 176 kilometers per hour. Authorities warned that winds and waves around Taiwan remained dangerous.
In China, some rail services were suspended, and tens of thousands of people were evacuated from Shanghai. Heavy rains are expected in Jiangsu, Shanghai and Zhejiang. In Japan, several flights were canceled, particularly in Okinawa, where two people were injured.
