Typhoon Dujuan is approaching Tokyo, as authorities warn of flooding and landslides

Typhoon Dujuan was approaching the Tokyo metropolitan area on Monday, bringing torrential rains, wind gusts of up to 144 km/h and a high risk of flooding and landslides. The Japan Meteorological Agency warned that rainfall in the Kanto region and eastern Japan could reach record levels.

The storm has already flooded the Izu Islands and several areas along the Pacific coast, where more than 300 liters of water per square meter have been recorded since the weekend. The highest-level landslide alert was issued in the town of Oshima. On Monday, the typhoon was located approximately 130 kilometers south of Katsuura, near Tokyo.

More than 1.6 million people were advised to evacuate, while over 9,000 households were left without electricity. One person was lightly injured, and nine homes were damaged. Authorities issued alerts for Tokyo and the prefectures of Chiba, Kanagawa and Shizuoka.

The storm led to the cancellation of 275 flights, the suspension of some train services and the cancellation of sporting and cultural events, including the final day of the Tokyo Game Show. Meteorologists warned that linear rain bands could cause flash floods and landslides in the coming hours.
