Thousands of Hungarians took to the streets of Budapest on Thursday to protest against the conservative government of Peter Magyar, in a demonstration organized by Fidesz, the party of former Prime Minister Viktor Orban. Under the slogan "Stop Tyranny", the protesters gathered at Buda Castle, expressing their dissatisfaction with a package of constitutional reforms proposed by the Tisza government.
These reforms aim to expand the autonomy of the National Judicial Office and the Supreme Court, as well as to limit the age for appointing judges to the Constitutional Court. Former Hungarian President Janos Ader stated that these constitutional changes pose a threat to the rule of law.
In contrast, the current government argues that the reforms are intended to restore constitutional democracy. Throughout Orban's four terms, Hungary has been accused of undermining the rule of law, which has led to the freezing of some EU funds. Magyar and his party recently won the elections promising reforms and the restoration of institutions.
