The World Health Organization (WHO) has called for a ceasefire in Sudan, after reports of the killing of over 460 people in a maternity hospital in El Fasher shocked the international community. WHO Director Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expressed the organization's dismay at the attacks on health workers and called for an immediate end to the violence.
The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have taken control of El Fasher, and fighting between the RSF and the Sudanese army continues to cause casualties among civilians. Since the beginning of the conflict in April 2023, WHO has recorded 185 attacks on medical facilities, resulting in 1,204 deaths. The RSF, which evolved from the Janjaweed militias, is accused of genocide and atrocities against civilians. Witnesses report violence and abuses committed by RSF fighters, including executions and sexual assaults. The actual number of victims may remain unknown.
