75 healthcare workers have been infected with the Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and 17 of them have died since the outbreak began, according to an official from the World Health Organization (WHO).

The lack of protective equipment, such as gloves and masks, has exposed medical staff to risk, and the healthcare system is facing an acute human resources crisis, with only 11 health workers for every 10,000 inhabitants.

WHO has intervened with psychological support for the affected healthcare workers.

The outbreak, officially declared on May 15, has also spread to Uganda, and WHO has classified it as a public health emergency of international concern, warning of the risk of regional spread in the context of population mobility and conflicts in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
