The British Army will now have the authority to board and seize sanctioned Russian vessels entering the territorial waters of Great Britain, according to a statement issued by Downing Street. This measure targets 544 ships suspected of being part of Russia's 'phantom fleet', which mainly includes old oil tankers that have been used to circumvent Western sanctions imposed following the war in Ukraine. Keir Starmer, the British Prime Minister, emphasized that Great Britain will close its waters, including the English Channel, to these ships, forcing operators to choose longer and more expensive routes or risk interception by British forces. Each operation will require government approval, and Starmer will discuss these measures at a summit of the Joint Expeditionary Force in Helsinki. The decision comes in the context of Washington announcing a temporary easing of restrictions on Russian oil, which has raised concerns about the impact on prices. London estimates that 75% of Russian oil is transported by this fleet, and the announced measures are intended to counteract the economic effects of these activities.
