Despite the unfavorable weather, the Olympic flame will be lit on November 1 in Greece, but the ceremony will take place inside the Olympic Museum, not at the temple of the goddess Hera, as is tradition. The Hellenic Olympic Committee (HOC) made this change to ensure the safety of participants and to maintain the dignity of the ceremony. The flame will be lit using a concave mirror, as is customary, and the flame obtained during the rehearsal will be used in the ceremony.
The IOC President, Kirsty Coventry, will participate for the first time in this ritual, and the torch will be handed over to Petros Gaidatzis, a bronze medalist in rowing. The flame will begin a journey of 2,200 km in Greece, before reaching Italy, where it will be carried by 10,001 people over a distance of 12,000 km. The opening ceremony of the Winter Olympic Games in Milan-Cortina is scheduled for February 6.
