Mount Olympus, with an elevation of 2,918 meters, is not only the highest mountain in Greece but also a symbol of Greek mythology, considered the residence of Zeus and the ancient gods. Greece submitted its candidacy for its inclusion on the UNESCO list in 2014, but international evaluators requested additional information to strengthen the application. They seek clear evidence of the geological significance and biodiversity of the area, as well as a clarification of the cultural value, proposing the inclusion of the archaeological site of Dion.

The mayor of the locality of Dio-Olympos, Evangelos Geroliolios, states that Mount Olympus is essential for the community, having global importance. Additionally, climber Babis Marinidis emphasizes the need for strict management to protect the ecosystem, considering the large number of annual visitors. UNESCO recognition would strengthen the locals' connection to the mountain and bring additional responsibilities for environmental protection. The final decision from UNESCO is eagerly awaited, having the potential to confirm the significance of this unique place.
