The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced on Tuesday the inclusion of freeride skiing and synchronized skating in the program of the 2030 Winter Olympics, which will take place in the French Alps.
This will be the first edition to achieve gender parity, with 3,046 athletes expected to compete in 126 events. The Nordic combined, a historic event present since 1924, has been removed from the program due to the low number of athletes and reduced public interest. Synchronized skating, known as "Synchro9", will showcase maneuvers executed simultaneously by nine skaters.
The IOC has decided not to feminize the Nordic combined, despite calls from female athletes and the existence of a women's World Cup. This change reflects an adaptation by the IOC to developments in winter sports and contemporary demands.
