UNESCO decided, during the 48th session of the World Heritage Committee held in Busan, to inscribe Mount Olympus in Greece on the World Heritage List, recognizing it for its exceptional natural and cultural value. This decision, adopted unanimously, makes Olympus one of the few sites worldwide with mixed status, having both cultural and natural significance.

The mountain, revered in Greek mythology as the dwelling place of the Olympic gods, is also a region rich in biodiversity, hosting nearly 2,000 plant species, including rare species. With this new inscription, the number of sites in Greece on the World Heritage List reaches 21. Greek officials believe that this recognition will support conservation efforts and increase the global visibility of this emblematic landscape.

Mount Olympus has been a sacred place since the Hellenistic period, and its religious significance continued into the Christian era. Greece began the process of recognizing Mount Olympus as a World Heritage site in 2014.
