Dmitri Peskov, the spokesperson for the Kremlin, stated that Lithuania's desire to deploy nuclear weapons on its territory will not enhance regional security but will prompt Russia to take retaliatory measures to protect its interests. This statement comes in the context of the proposal by Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda to lift the constitutional ban on the deployment of nuclear weapons to contribute to nuclear deterrence against threats from Russia.

Peskov emphasized that such a decision could increase danger for the Baltic states, recalling a similar decision made by Finland. Amending the Lithuanian Constitution, which prohibits the placement of weapons of mass destruction, would require approval from Parliament in two rounds, with a three-month interval between votes.
