The President of Lithuania, Gitanas Nauseda, proposes amending the Constitution to allow the deployment of nuclear weapons on the territory of the country.

The President of Lithuania, Gitanas Nauseda, announced on Friday the intention to amend the Constitution to allow the deployment of nuclear weapons in Lithuania, in the context of tensions with Russia.

At a press conference in Berlin, Nauseda emphasized the importance of Lithuania's participation in Western nuclear deterrence. He proposed a constitutional amendment to remove the existing restriction on nuclear weapons, an initiative supported by a group of 50 Lithuanian parliamentarians. The amendment to the Constitution requires parliamentary approval twice with a two-thirds majority, with a gap of at least three months between votes. This proposal comes shortly after Finland lifted the ban on the deployment of nuclear weapons following its NATO membership.

Nauseda mentioned that the current geopolitical context requires an adaptation of national legislation.
