Lithuania is preparing to remove the ban on nuclear weapons from its Constitution, in the context of the Russian threat.

The President of Lithuania, Gitanas Nausėda, announced that parliamentary parties have agreed on a plan to amend the Constitution to remove the ban on nuclear weapons and foreign military bases. This measure, which requires a two-thirds majority in two parliamentary votes, comes after an analysis of the current geopolitical situation, which has deteriorated, especially following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Lithuania, a NATO member state, has increased defense spending and is modernizing its armed forces, having borders with the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad and Belarus. The president also emphasized that there are no immediate plans for the storage of nuclear weapons, but lifting the ban would allow for a rapid response in the event of a change in security. Constitutional amendments could be adopted by the end of the year.
