Two important texts that establish immigration rules have been adopted by the European Parliament, allowing member states to return asylum seekers to countries that the EU considers "safe," according to a predetermined list. This measure was inspired by the initiative of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who has already tested this approach through centers established in Albania. The adoption of these rules was made possible due to an alliance between right-wing parties and the far right, but it has sparked criticism from NGOs and left-wing politicians, who warn about the treatment of asylum seekers.

Green MEP Mélissa Camara denounced these measures as a step towards the dehumanization of the EU's migration policy. The European Commission rejected the criticisms, emphasizing that destination countries must respect fundamental human rights. A list of countries considered "safe" has also been approved, including Kosovo, Bangladesh, Colombia, Egypt, India, Morocco, and Tunisia, with the aim of accelerating the processing of asylum applications. This change comes against the backdrop of a 25% decrease in arrivals in the EU compared to last year, but pressure on European politicians remains high, in the context of a political shift increasingly to the right in Europe.
