Alvaro Garcia Ortiz, the chief prosecutor of Spain, announced on Monday that he is resigning after the Supreme Court found him guilty of disclosing confidential information in a case related to the partner of an opposition leader, Isabel Diaz Ayuso. This decision represents a blow to the coalition government of Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who appointed Ortiz in 2022. In his resignation letter, Ortiz emphasized respect for judicial decisions, although he mentioned that he is convinced he served the institution faithfully.
Although his resignation was anticipated, the Supreme Court has not yet published the reasons for the verdict, and Ortiz has the option to appeal the decision before the Constitutional Court of Spain. The government spokesperson expressed disagreement with the verdict, highlighting that the lack of unanimity in the decision has generated unease among the public. The case was related to the disclosure of information about Alberto Gonzalez Amador, the partner of regional leader Ayuso, who was being investigated for tax fraud.
