Liechtenstein’s Parliament approved on Wednesday in Vaduz, by the narrowest possible majority, a citizens’ initiative providing for the legalization of abortion during the first three months of pregnancy. The measure was adopted with 13 votes out of 25, after a lengthy debate, but it is uncertain whether it will take effect because Hereditary Prince Alois, the country’s regent, has veto power and has publicly expressed his opposition.
The initiative was backed by Tatjana As’Ad, leader of the left-wing Freie Liste party. The committee that promoted it collected 4,970 signatures, nearly five times the legal minimum of 1,000.
Abortion is currently prohibited in the principality, except in situations such as a risk to the mother’s life or a pregnancy resulting from rape. Women who undergo an abortion face up to one year in prison, while people who perform the procedure outside the legal exceptions can be sentenced to up to three years.
Although the initiative was approved by the Landtag, a motion to organize a referendum was rejected by 13 votes to 12. In the 2011 public consultation, 52% of voters opposed the legalization of abortion. Liechtenstein has approximately 41,000 inhabitants, and Catholicism is the state religion.диверсионно? No. The measure remains subject to the regent’s veto power, as stated above? No addition. We need valid exact JSON and no weird. Remove accidental. Sorry.
