President Nicusor Dan attended the meeting of the Superior Council of Magistracy on Thursday, September 3, where he argued that magistrates suspected of committing crimes should be investigated. The head of state sat next to Lia Savonea, president of the High Court of Cassation and Justice.

Nicusor Dan stated that he would participate only in the first item on the agenda and would not take part in the deliberations or vote, so as not to influence the decision. He said that most magistrates are honest and take on their social responsibility, but that the image of the justice system and Romanians’ trust in the rule of law also depend on investigating those who might break the law.

The president emphasized that corruption is part of the National Defense Strategy and was mentioned in the European Commission’s recent report on the rule of law in Romania.

Nicusor Dan also drew attention to the shortage of prosecutors specializing in investigating magistrates, both at the Prosecutor General’s Office and at the prosecutor’s offices attached to tribunals, and advocated addressing this staff shortage by adding personnel.:
