Nicușor Dan, message to the new magistrates: "The most important indicator is the people's trust in the justice system. And if the trust is as it is today, at 25%, it means that we all, together, are doing something wrong."

On September 1, President Nicușor Dan welcomed the new permanent magistrates at the Cotroceni Palace, emphasizing their crucial responsibility in maintaining citizens' trust in the Romanian state. He warned against temptations such as arrogance, complacency, and conformity, which can affect judicial decisions. Nicușor Dan highlighted that the image of the state depends on how those subject to justice perceive the fairness provided by magistrates. He also discussed the complex relationship between the justice system and politics, stressing the need to address the issues that have led to a low level of trust, at only 25%.

"The justice service is public (...) and the most important indicator is people's trust in the justice system. And if trust is as it is today, at 25%, it means that we all, together, are doing something wrong and it is something that we all together need to correct. There is also a relationship that will take us some time to balance the relationship between the justice system and politics. Because first it was the political side that neglected, after which there were some excesses on this side as well, I am referring especially to the salary area, and then, most seriously, a campaign began to blame the entire professional body. And this, obviously, is not healthy for either side. And here, again, from both sides, we have work to do, because this is the meaning of your profession, to find the right balance in the matters you have to resolve, the principle of proportionality," the head of state told the new magistrates.
