Begoña Gomez, the wife of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, will be tried by a jury for charges of influence peddling and embezzlement, according to a decision by the court in Madrid. This represents a significant legal challenge for the Prime Minister's family, which is facing corruption scandals.

Gomez's legal team contests the charges and has requested the Superior Court in Madrid to dismiss them. The court has dropped a third charge but has maintained the others, including previously imposed prohibitions.

Prime Minister Sánchez has publicly defended his wife, stating that the charges are politically motivated and that Gomez is innocent. Additionally, a recent court has convicted Sánchez's brother for administrative offenses, adding pressure on the government. The jury trial is reserved for serious crimes, and the conviction rate in such cases is approximately 90%.
