Former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, pleaded not guilty before a court in New York in a case in which they are accused of conspiring to commit acts of torture against political opponents.

According to AFP, U.S. prosecutors claim that the alleged abuses included electric shocks, beatings and simulated drowning. Maduro, who describes himself as a “prisoner of war,” denied the charges, calling them false.

The couple has been detained in the United States since January, after allegedly being captured in a U.S. military operation carried out in Venezuela. They are being held in a federal prison in Brooklyn under strict conditions, without access to newspapers or the internet, but can communicate by telephone with their family and lawyers.

Maduro and Flores are also accused of drug trafficking and firearms offenses. The trial is scheduled to begin on June 1, 2027.

Throughout his tenure, Maduro was accused by human rights organizations of using repression to maintain his grip on power. After his capture, former Vice President Delcy Rodriguez took over the leadership of Venezuela on an interim basis, amid pressure from the United States.
