Serbia has concluded a secret agreement with Atlantic Incubation Partners LLC, a company owned by Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of Donald Trump, to develop a hotel complex on the site of the former headquarters of the Serbian armed forces, bombed by NATO in 1999. The agreement, published by Radar magazine, grants Kushner's firm a 77.5% stake in the joint venture, while the Serbian government will hold 22.5%.
The project has sparked protests in Belgrade, and the Serbian government has adopted a special law to expedite development, allowing it to bypass existing regulations. The agreement stipulates the demolition of existing buildings and the removal of cultural monument status, and if Serbia does not meet the deadline of May 2024, the American firm can terminate the contract. Student protests against corruption have been revitalized, and demonstrators are trying to block the sale of the land, considering its historical significance.
