A new record has been set for the Nepalese side of Mount Everest, with 274 climbers reaching the summit on Wednesday, according to officials from Nepal's mountaineering expeditions.
The previous record was 223 people, recorded on May 22, 2019. Rishi Bhandari, the general secretary of the Nepal Expedition Operators Association, confirmed that the tally could increase as some climbers have not yet reported reaching the summit.
Everest, with an altitude of 8,849 meters, remains a major challenge for climbers. This year, Chinese authorities did not issue permits for ascents from the Tibetan side, while Nepal issued 494 permits, each costing $15,000.
The increase in the number of climbers on Everest raises concerns about dangerous traffic jams in the 'death zone,' where oxygen levels are extremely low. Nepalese authorities have promised stricter rules to limit access for inexperienced climbers, but the popularity of Everest continues to grow.
