In 2026, Everest surpassed the previous record for ascents, with over 1,000 climbers reaching the 8,849-meter summit, according to preliminary data.

Stable weather contributed to this record number, and Nepal issued 494 permits for foreign climbers, the highest number in history. On May 21, 275 people reached the summit in a single day, setting a new record.

Although the season was marked by five deaths, expedition operators consider it a success. Criticism regarding overcrowding and environmental impact has increased, and authorities have proposed stricter rules for obtaining permits. Additionally, climate change is affecting the Himalayan region, and the melting of glaciers is a major concern.
