The Hungarian editorial office of Radio Free Europe has announced the cessation of activities starting Friday, at the request of the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM). This decision comes after the commitment of the American administration to close Szabad Europa, following a meeting between nationalist Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and Donald Trump. USAGM accused the station of trying to destabilize Hungary, according to statements from the agency's head, Kari Lake. Although the editorial office is closing, previous articles will remain accessible to readers. Szabad Europa was closed after the fall of the Soviet Union but was reopened in 2020 after the U.S. Congress decided to fund it due to concerns about press freedom in Hungary. Since Orban's return to power in 2010, many independent media outlets have been closed or transformed into pro-government propaganda tools.
