Viktor Orban, the Prime Minister of Hungary, is facing a difficult situation after the Trump administration announced sanctions against major Russian oil companies and canceled the Budapest summit. While Orban has tried to maintain relations with both Russia and the USA, the American sanctions threaten Hungary's economy, which relies 92% on Russian oil. In contrast, most EU countries have diversified their energy sources to reduce dependence on Russia.

Additionally, the European Union has confirmed the ban on imports of liquefied natural gas from Russia starting in 2027. Orban is struggling with a growing opposition, and the economic crisis could affect his support ahead of the parliamentary elections next spring. Although he stated that his government is working to circumvent the sanctions, Orban's political future depends on how the USA will enforce these measures. It remains to be seen whether Hungary will find solutions or be sanctioned for its pro-Moscow policy.
