Health alerts related to the "orange" and "yellow" heatwave have been issued across England, amid a prolonged heatwave, one of the longest since 1976. Temperatures of up to 36°C are expected in southern England, while in the north, values of around 25°C will be recorded.
"Orange" alerts target the Midlands, the east and south of England, while "yellow" alerts are active in the north. It is estimated that the high temperatures will significantly affect health services, with an increased risk of deaths, especially among the elderly or those with medical conditions.
The heatwave began on Monday, and temperatures have already exceeded the threshold of 32.4°C in several locations. It is expected that the heat will intensify and move northward, including into Northern Ireland and Scotland, by Friday. Although humidity will be relatively low, nights will remain warm, with possible tropical nights in major cities.
The heatwave could last up to 14 days in some areas of southern England.
