The United Kingdom entered a red heatwave alert on Wednesday, a rare event that will last until Thursday evening.
Temperatures in southern England and Wales are forecasted to reach highs of 37-39 degrees Celsius. The warning is valid in the East Midlands, East England, London, the southeast and southwest of England, as well as in Wales.
The Met Office has warned of risks of power outages and essential services, as well as delays in rail and air transport. Hundreds of schools in Somerset, Buckinghamshire, and Gloucestershire will be closed or partially closed to protect students. Additionally, transport officials have recommended avoiding travel, noting that several train services have been canceled or reduced to ensure the safety of the railways.
