A 28-year-old man, employed as a security agent at the United States Embassy in Oslo, has been sentenced to three years and seven months in prison for espionage in favor of Russia and Iran. Between March and November 2024, he provided sensitive information about the embassy's activities in exchange for 10,000 euros from the Russians and 0.17 bitcoin (approximately 8,500 euros) from the Iranians.
The Oslo court determined that the disclosed information could be used in direct actions against the targeted individuals. Although he admitted to the facts, the young man contested the charge of espionage under aggravating circumstances, arguing that the information was not classified. He transmitted details about diplomats, embassy plans, and security routines, which led the prosecution to seek a harsher sentence. Norwegian intelligence services consider Russia, Iran, and China as the main threats in the field of espionage.
