The Prime Minister of Norway, Jonas Gahr Støre, announced on Wednesday that the country will come under France's nuclear umbrella, in the context of growing concerns regarding the United States' commitment to Europe's security.

This decision marks a significant change for Norway, which has been an Atlanticist nation, relying on the security provided by Washington. Støre signed a new defense agreement with French President Emmanuel Macron, which includes Norway's joining a nuclear initiative led by France. The Prime Minister emphasized that this move is motivated by Russia's rearmament and its conflict with other European countries. Although Norway will benefit from France's nuclear protection, no nuclear weapons will be stationed on its territory in peacetime. Norway thus becomes the most recent country to join this initiative, following Poland and Lithuania, considering its proximity to Russia.
