Norway announced on Friday the opening of a general consulate in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, as part of a strategy to strengthen its presence in the Arctic, in the context of international tensions caused by U.S. President Donald Trump's statements regarding taking control of the island. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre emphasized the importance of the northern region for international policy and security, stating that the High North remains a strategic priority.
The consulate will facilitate political contacts and cooperation in areas of common interest in the region. This move comes against the backdrop of the recent opening of a French consulate in Greenland and the relocation of the American consulate to a larger building. Protests took place in May when Greenlanders opposed President Trump's ambitions to gain control over Greenland.
