Lithuania has decided to close its border with Belarus after dozens of unidentified objects, which appear to be helium balloons, invaded Lithuanian airspace. The airport in Vilnius has also been closed due to this situation.
Prime Minister Inga Ruginiene emphasized that this measure is a signal to Belarus that hybrid attacks will not be tolerated. Lithuania is considering activating Article 4 of NATO, given the presence of these objects. Authorities suspect that the balloons could be used by smugglers for transporting cigarettes, but blame Russia and Belarus for pressuring Lithuania.
66 unidentified objects have been detected by radar, and the president's advisor characterized the attack as part of a "hybrid-psychological operation." The Lithuanian National Security Council will meet to discuss future measures, including the possible extension of the border closure.
