Latvia announced on Tuesday the discovery of a tunnel under the border with Belarus, in the context of the increasing number of migrants attempting to cross the border illegally. The Minister of the Interior, Janis Dombrava, stated that the protection of the eastern border will be strengthened through closer collaboration between various security agencies and the use of drones to detect illegal migrants.
Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs emphasized that criminal networks facilitate migration from Belarus, and migrants are seeking easier routes to enter the European Union. Latvia will implement operation "Werewolf" to combat these networks and will collaborate with Estonia, Lithuania, and Poland to stop the flow of migrants. The situation has been described as a "hybrid threat," and Latvia has doubled the number of police officers at the border to address the challenges.
