Latvia’s armed forces reported on Sunday that an unidentified object had entered the country’s airspace near the borders with Belarus and Russia. The alert lasted approximately 30 minutes, until the military announced that the object had left Latvian airspace.
During the incident, authorities asked residents to remain indoors and not approach any objects flying at low altitude or appearing suspicious. No information was provided about the object’s nature or its possible country of origin.
The incident comes amid several accidental incursions by Ukrainian military drones into the airspace of Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Kyiv says some drones were diverted by Russian jamming, while Moscow accuses Ukraine of using NATO airspace for attacks.
The alert in Latvia was triggered one day after a similar incident in Romania. Six counties in the country’s northeast were placed under an air alert after two drones entered national airspace. Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, all NATO members, are located near areas affected by the war in Ukraine, keeping the level of regional vigilance high.
