The Japanese are called to the polls on Sunday for the legislative elections, and the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) expects to achieve a significant victory.

According to polls, the LDP and its coalition partner, Ishin, could win together up to 300 seats out of the 465 in the lower house. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, who took office in October, called for early elections due to her high popularity, especially among young people. Takaichi promised to suspend an 8% tax on food products to help households affected by rising prices. However, difficult weather conditions, including heavy snowfall, could affect voter turnout. In some areas, up to 70 cm of snow is expected, which could reduce the number of voters. A decrease in the turnout rate could favor organized electoral blocks. Polling stations will close at 8:00 PM (11:00 GMT), and the first forecasts will be available immediately after the polls close.
