A 7.1 magnitude earthquake occurred in Japan at 16:27 local time, with the epicenter at a depth of 10 kilometers, near the city of Kumamoto.

Images broadcast by NHK show extensive damage, with cracked roads and bridges, buildings in flames, and an Aeon Mall shopping center, where the second floor collapsed, leaving dozens of people trapped.

The Prime Minister of Japan, Sanae Takaichi, confirmed that there are already several injured people. Train services have been suspended, and thousands of homes are without power. Emergency teams have been mobilized to help assess the damage and the injured.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has warned that strong aftershocks are possible in the coming period, considering the shallow depth of the earthquake.

Japan is known for its intense seismic activity, recording approximately 1,500 earthquakes annually.
