Japan increases visa fees for tourists by 400%

The Japanese government announced on Friday a significant increase in visa fees, the first of its kind since 1978. The fee for single-entry visas, including tourist visas, will rise from 3,000 to 15,000 yen (16 to 81 euros), while for multiple-entry visas, the fee will increase from 6,000 to 30,000 yen (32 to 162 euros).

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Toshimitsu Motegi, stated that he does not expect this measure to immediately affect tourism, considering the overall increase in prices in Japan. Exceptions to these fees apply to countries in the visa waiver program, such as Spain and other American nations. The new rates will come into effect for applications submitted starting July 1, aiming to align Japan with G7 standards.

Romanian citizens can travel to Japan without a visa for stays of up to 90 days, provided they engage in unpaid activities.
