Venice wants to increase the tourist tax in 2027 / The fee could reach 30 euros

Venice is considering raising the access fee for day visitors starting in 2027, amid concerns about overtourism. The current fee, ranging from €5 to €10, is considered too low to discourage overcrowding during peak periods.

Simone Venturini, the city’s tourism councillor, told Il Gazzettino that the fee could reach €50, although local authorities could set a cap of €30. The final amount must be discussed and agreed with the Italian Government.

Visitors who make their reservation at least three days in advance pay €5, while tourists staying in the city are exempt from this fee but pay the tourist tax for each night of accommodation. The measure is being applied for the third year, after it was introduced experimentally in 2024 for just 29 days.

This season, the fee was collected on 60 high-traffic days between April and July, from 08:30 to 16:00. Venice raised more than €5.2 million from nearly 680,000 tickets. Last year, more than 720,000 day visitors generated approximately €5.4 million. Critics, however, say the fee has not significantly reduced the number of tourists.
