Joseph Kabila, the former president of the Democratic Republic of Congo, has been sentenced to death in absentia by a military court for war crimes and treason, in the context of support for the rebel group M23. The charges include crimes against humanity and torture. Kabila, who led the country for nearly 20 years, went into self-imposed exile in 2023, after the deterioration of relations with the current president Félix Tshisekedi. The conflict in eastern Congo has escalated, and the UN accuses Rwanda of involvement in supporting M23.
