A Russian frigate launched two flares at a Danish military helicopter in international waters south of Denmark

A Russian frigate fired two emergency flares at a Danish military helicopter on Monday evening in international waters south of Denmark. The incident occurred during a routine mission near the town of Gedser, on the island of Falster.

According to the Danish Armed Forces, the helicopter was taking photographs in an area south of Gedser when it approached the Russian warship. At that moment, the frigate fired two flares, one of which reportedly passed very close to the helicopter. No casualties or damage were reported.

Danish Defence Minister Jeppe Bruus described the action as unprofessional and said Russia had crossed the line in terms of risk-taking. He said Denmark would continue its monitoring missions, which are considered fully legitimate.

Following the incident, Copenhagen’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Russian ambassador. The date of the meeting has not yet been set. Danish authorities are assessing the situation amid heightened tensions between Russia and NATO states.
