Swedish and Finnish aircraft identified Russian aircraft over the Gulf of Finland, in international airspace

Swedish and Finnish fighter jets were urgently scrambled on Thursday, September 24, to identify Russian aircraft flying over the Gulf of Finland, in international airspace. The operation was announced Friday by the Finnish Air Force and represents the first joint operational identification mission carried out by the two air forces.

The Nordic aircraft identified a Russian detachment consisting of a Tu-134 transport aircraft and MiG-31 and Su-30 fighter jets. The mission was conducted under rapid alert procedures, known by the acronym QRA, used to monitor air activity in the region.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said that the Baltic Sea is more vulnerable than ever, but also better protected, amid intensifying tensions in recent years. Nordic aircraft are regularly scrambled to identify Russian aircraft.

Sweden and Finland joined NATO after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Helsinki recently strengthened its military cooperation with Kyiv in the field of drones, announced its accession to the French nuclear deterrence program, and inaugurated sections of a 200-kilometer fence along the border with Russia.
