The Jordanian Parliament adopted a law on Monday that reinstates mandatory military service for men, starting in 2026, after it was abolished in 1991. The announcement was made by Crown Prince Hussein bin Abdullah, who emphasized the importance of preparing young people to defend their country. The bill was sent by the government to parliament and, after adoption, will need to be ratified and approved by the king. The House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly in favor of this amended law, which will become a priority for the government.
The program provides for the recruitment of 6,000 men aged 18 by February, with a long-term goal of 10,000 per year. Failure to report for military service will be punished with imprisonment from three months to one year. The government spokesperson dismissed any connection between this measure and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's statements regarding "Greater Israel."
