Refineries in India, especially Reliance Industries, the largest Indian buyer of Russian oil, are preparing to significantly reduce imports of crude from Russia, following sanctions imposed by the United States on Lukoil and Rosneft. These measures are part of efforts to limit Moscow's revenues for financing the war in Ukraine. Reliance has stated that it will align with the Indian Government's directives regarding the recalibration of Russian oil imports. State refineries in India are reviewing trade documents to ensure that deliveries do not come directly from the sanctioned companies. Although a significant reduction in imports is expected, some shipments will continue to reach the market before the deadline set by the U.S. India has become the largest buyer of Russian oil, importing approximately 1.7 million barrels per day in the first nine months of the year.
