Hurricane Melissa, a category 5 storm, struck the southwest coast of Jamaica, causing significant damage and leaving at least 19 dead in its wake. Four days after the storm, rescue and humanitarian teams mobilized to reach isolated communities, particularly in the parishes of Elizabeth and Westmoreland, where roads are blocked by fallen trees and concrete poles. Locals in some villages are forced to use water from rivers and subsist on coconuts. The Minister of Social Protection, Pearnel Charles Jr., led convoys with essential supplies, including food and medicine. Additionally, an American intervention team arrived to support humanitarian operations. Prime Minister Andrew Holness emphasized the importance of restoring electricity and communications, especially in areas severely affected by flooding.
