In Japan, heat waves have led to at least three deaths and more than 220 people in emergency care, according to local authorities. Record-high temperatures were recorded in 14 cities, with highs of 34.4°C in central Tokyo. Heat wave alerts are being issued and authorities are advising people, especially the elderly, to protect themselves and stay in air-conditioned spaces, as they have accounted for the majority of deaths in recent years.
