Three lions from the Tama Zoo, located west of Tokyo, have died, most likely due to heat shock, in the context of a new heatwave affecting Japan. The zoo's spokesperson stated that, since mid-July, between 10 and 16 lions have shown symptoms of dehydration and decreased activity.

The extreme heat, with temperatures reaching 40 degrees Celsius, has been accompanied by high humidity, complicating the situation for these felines. The zoo has implemented additional measures to combat the heat, including watering the facilities and improving ventilation.

The organization PETA has criticized zoos, emphasizing that animals live in captivity without adequate conditions. During the same period, nearly 18,600 people have been hospitalized in Japan due to the heat, and the country is facing an increase in heat-related deaths in the context of climate change.
