The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs has declared that the establishment by Turkey of two marine parks in the Mediterranean Sea and in the northern Aegean Sea is "illegal," as these areas "occupy international waters" and extend over the Greek continental shelf.
Turkey recently announced the creation of these protected areas, including the Fethiye-Kas National Marine Park, which covers 21,706 square kilometers, and another park around the Dardanelles Strait, covering 1,742 square kilometers.
Athens considers that these parks have no legal effect and cannot be regarded as "accomplished facts."
According to Greek diplomacy, Turkey's initiatives "do not contribute to strengthening an atmosphere of good neighborliness and seriously compromise the efforts made to maintain mutual understanding relations between the two countries."
The Syriza party criticized the Greek Government for lacking a national strategy, accusing Turkey of ongoing provocations.
Tensions between Greece and Turkey, historical rivals, continue to persist, despite recent efforts to improve bilateral relations.
