Greece has decided to extend the list of protected beaches against over-tourism to 251 locations, where sunbeds, umbrellas, beach bars, or loud music will no longer be allowed.

This measure is part of a broader strategy to protect the Hellenic coastline, with most beaches included in the European Natura 2000 network. Among the protected areas are Balos lagoon and the pink beach of Elafonissi, as well as beaches in the Small Cyclades and Corfu.

In addition, at least 70% of the Greek coastline will remain free of sunbeds, and in protected areas, this percentage rises to 85%. The demand for protection came from local communities, which requested measures to preserve the natural beauty of the beaches.

The Greek authorities have also introduced a classification of the territory into five levels, reflecting tourist pressure, with strict restrictions in overburdened areas. In comparison, Italy is facing a different debate, focusing on the renewal of beach concessions.
