A Turkish drone illegally entered Greek airspace, flying over an airport near the city of Alexandroupolis, in the northeast of the country. The incident required the immediate mobilization of the Greek air forces, which sent F-16 fighter jets to intercept the drone. It approached the landing runway of the airport at the moment a passenger plane was preparing for takeoff, which generated a situation considered "particularly concerning."
The F-16s managed to identify and remove the drone from Greek airspace, which exited near the island of Samothraki. The incident did not affect flight safety at the airport, which used another runway for takeoff. Greek military sources stated that such incidents are frequent, with an increasing number of violations of airspace by Turkish aircraft, especially drones, recording 433 such incidents up to August 2026. Greek authorities continue to protest against these violations.
